Integrated Pest Management (IPM)

What is an IPM program?

IPM is the Pest Management process that involves using a combination of techniques to prevent and control insect infestations. It involves using chemical and mechanical control measures along with monitoring and behavior modification.

There are five components to an IPM program:

  1. Inspection and Identification
  2. Monitoring
  3. Action decisions
  4. Treatments
  5. Evaluation and communication

What are the benefits of an IPM program?

The benefits of an IPM program are long term solutions, a reduction in pesticide use which prevents pesticide resistance and helps the environment.

Integrated Pest Management means a decision making process that uses a combination of techniques to suppress pests and that must include but is not limited to the following elements:

  • planning and managing ecosystems to prevent organisms from becoming pests;
  • Identifying potential pest problems;
  • monitoring populations of pest ans beneficial organisms pest damage and environmental conditions;
  • using injury thresholds in making treatment decisions;
  • reducing pest populations to acceptable levels using strategies that may include a combination of biological, physical, cultural, mechanical, behavioral and chemical control;
  • evaluating the effectiveness of treatments.
